Short answer

If the previous rabies vaccination expired before the booster was administered, the new vaccination may be treated as a primary vaccination for travel purposes. This can affect the passport entry, use of an earlier antibody titre and possible certification date. Do not alter the record yourself: obtain the clinic’s primary evidence, scan the microchip and ask a veterinarian to establish a new lawful plan.

First establish whether there was a gap

Check the previous vaccination date and validity, the new vaccination date, product name and batch. The legally relevant point is the validity recorded for that vaccination and product, not a casual assumption that every dose lasts exactly one year.

Ask the clinic for the primary register or medical record if the passport entry is unclear. A vaccination date or validity period cannot be extended retrospectively.

Check the chip and the order of records

Scan the microchip and compare its code with every document. The rabies vaccination used for travel must be linked to an identified animal.

Vaccination before microchipping or a mistyped chip number is a separate problem. A new sticker without traceable veterinary confirmation does not correct it.

How a gap may affect the antibody titre

A satisfactory titre generally does not need to be repeated while rabies vaccination is renewed continuously before the previous vaccination expires. A missed booster can break that continuity.

Whether an earlier laboratory result remains usable must be assessed against the full record sequence and the rules for the movement. A result without documented current vaccination does not automatically authorise travel.

The lawful next steps

  • do not change entries yourself or replace the passport to hide the gap;
  • obtain evidence of earlier vaccinations from the clinic;
  • scan and record the exact microchip number;
  • vaccinate according to the veterinarian’s plan;
  • check which laboratory and certification stages must be completed again.

FAQ

Quick answers

Does being one day late count as a gap?+

The official end date of the previous vaccination’s validity controls the assessment. If the new dose followed that date, the competent veterinarian may treat it as primary.

Can the clinic enter an earlier date in the passport?+

No. That would create an inaccurate record and may lead to refusal, detention of the pet or other consequences.

Does the titre become unusable after a late booster?+

Continued use of the result depends on uninterrupted valid vaccination. After a gap, the complete case must be reassessed from official records.

Is a new vaccination immediately before travel enough?+

Not necessarily. After a gap, primary-vaccination, laboratory-testing and waiting conditions may apply again.

Who should confirm the new plan?+

A veterinarian working from the primary records and the competent authority responsible for the international certificate on the route.
