Bringing a dog or cat to Canada: rabies certificate and document checks

Why owners ask this

Public pet-travel discussions and FAQs often ask whether a pet passport is enough, whether a health certificate is needed and whether an airline can ask for more than the border authority.

Treat Canadian import rules, export-country documents and carrier rules as separate checks.

Rabies document checks

• animal identification, including microchip number where available;
• rabies vaccination date and vaccine name;
• veterinarian/clinic details, signature and stamp where the form uses them;
• validity period shown by the record and vaccine;
• document language or translation acceptance before travel.

Dogs: age and import purpose

CFIA separates dog scenarios by age and whether the dog is accompanied by the owner. Sale, adoption, fostering, breeding, exhibitions or other non-private purposes can change the pathway.

When buying or adopting abroad, ask about origin, veterinary history, age at rabies vaccination and documents before committing.

Cats: check the cat scenario

Do not apply dog rules automatically to cats. CFIA has a separate domestic-cat pathway in its pet import tool, so check the animal-specific scenario.

Airline checks

Air Canada notes that local veterinary health certificates may be essential but may not be enough for government inspection. Carrier acceptance, seasonal restrictions and forms must be confirmed separately.
